Millions of American families face the risk of being evicted from their homes because they have been unable to pay rent allowances for several months because of the epidemic, with the delay in suspending the evictions that protect them.

The deputies failed to reach an agreement to grant additional time to tenants facing financial distress, despite overwhelming circumstances, particularly with the outbreak of the "delta" mutant, which is the cause of the re-increase in the number of cases of COFID-19.

A parliamentary committee proposed extending the deadline until 31 December, but this offer did not receive sufficient support, including among the Democrats, asking for an extension of the grace period until 18 October.

In a statement, Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, said, "Unfortunately, no Republican has supported this measure. It's very disappointing that Republicans in the House and Senate are refusing to work with us on this issue. "

A congressional source stated that the proposal was not unanimous among the Democrats themselves.

It is reported that more than 10 million people have failed to pay their rent allowances, according to estimates by the Centre for Budget and Policy Priorities, an independent research institute.

According to a study by the Bureau of Statistics conducted in early July on 51 million tenants, about 3.6 million tenants are threatened with being evicted from their homes within two months.

President Joe Biden asked Congress to extend the suspension, but his move faces criticism as many take him to wait until the last minute to move.

It should be noted that this period followed an earlier one approved by the administration of former President Donald Trump in March 2020 to prevent the expulsion of millions of people who had lost their jobs because of the epidemic, but the Centre concluded that the previous one "did not affect all tenants."

To further complicate the situation, there is a delay in the arrival in their bank accounts of the amounts promised by the Federal Government to help tenants pay their rents.
