It was not immediately clear whether Elon Musk would respond to the invitation The European Parliament announced that its Italian President, Roberta Metsola, sent a letter to Elon Musk asking the new owner of Twitter to testify before the Legislative Council of the European Union.
It is worth noting that the European Parliament does not have the power to force the richest man in the world to appear before it
Musk, who heads the electric car maker Tesla Inc., has sparked widespread controversy since he acquired the social networking platform Twitter in October for 44 billion dollars.
Since his acquisition of Twitter, Musk has dismissed half of the company's senior employees, reactivated the account of former US President Donald Trump and canceled the anti-disinformation policy on covid-19. Musk also froze the accounts of some journalists, which raised concerns in Brussels, and prevented promotion via Twitter of competing social platforms, before returning from this.
These many changes have attracted the attention of policy makers in both the United States and Europe. The European Commission has already warned Musk that the EU may impose sanctions on him because of the threat he poses to media freedom.
Musk was criticized especially by Democratic officials in the United States, and he decided to disclose the so-called "Twitter files" and published an additional batch of them on Tuesday morning.
On Monday, Musk conducted a poll via Twitter in which he asked users of the site whether they wanted him to stay as head of the site or to step down. The controversial billionaire pledged to abide by the result of the survey. 57.5% of those who took part in the survey answered"yes", thereby supporting his departure.
Later, in response to one of the tweeters who claimed that he had found a successor, Musk replied, "No one wants a job that can really keep Twitter alive. There is no one behind me". But it is not yet known whether Musk will abide by the result of the referendum.
Twitter's stock price has fallen by a third since Musk bought the platform.
