Finland officially became the 31st member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), marking a major shift in the security landscape in northeastern Europe that adds some 1,300 kilometers (830 miles) to the alliance’s frontier with Russia.
On 5 July 2022, NATO signed the accession protocol for Finland to join the alliance. If Finland joins NATO, the 1340-kilometer border with Russia will become the new NATO-Russia border.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday that all NATO members agree that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance.
