President Mohamed Bazoum, who was overthrown in a coup in Niger, where a demonstration in support of the coup military gathered thousands of their supporters near the French military base in the capital Niamey.

The Chiefs of staff of the armies of the ECOWAS countries were scheduled to meet in the Ghanaian capital Accra in order to advise the organization's leaders on the "best options" regarding their decision to activate and deploy the "reserve forces", but according to regional military sources, the meeting was postponed for "technical reasons" without revealing a new date.

Thousands of supporters of the coup plotters in Niger gathered on Friday near the French military base in the capital Niamey and chanted anti-French slogans during the rally, the day after the "ECOWAS" summit, which ended with the approval of a possible military intervention in Niger.

More than two weeks after the coup that overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, concerns are growing about the conditions of his detention and the European Union, the African Union and the United Nations condemned the "deterioration of the conditions of detention" of Bazoum, who is detained with his wife and son, and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed his "displeasure" at the refusal of the military to release Bazoum and his family as a "goodwill gesture".

It is worth noting that not all West African countries are opposed to the new authorities in Niger, both neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso have declared that any military intervention would be a "declaration of war" against them.

For its part, Russia reiterated on Friday, August 11, its rejection of any military intervention in Niger, as "it could lead to a prolonged confrontation in the country and to severe destabilization of the entire Sahara and Sahel region".
