The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Monday that between 60,000 and 90,000 people have fled Sudan to neighboring Chad since violence erupted last month.

More than 250,000 people have crossed borders into neighboring countries since the start of the conflict, and more are expected to flee as the fighting continues.

"About 90 percent of the new arrivals are women and children. Many of them are sheltering under trees in temporary shelters with very limited services," said Raouf Mazou, Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, after a four-day visit to Chad.

"With the rainy season approaching, we urgently have to move the new arrivals to the nearest refugee camps," he said in a statement issued in N'Djamena.

The new arrivals add to some 600,000 refugees, mostly from Sudan, already in Chad after fleeing previous conflicts.

The UNHCR said Chad now hosts some 700,000 refugees in total and called for more international support for refugees from Sudan.

The United Nations World Food Program announced earlier this month that it needed $162.4 million to support the Government of Chad in assisting 2.3 million people in urgent need of food.
