The head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, confirmed that he is ready to send his units to defend the Russian Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, which has been subjected in recent days to intense bombing and attacks.

   Prigozhin said: "If the Russian Defense Ministry does not stop what is happening in the Belgorod region, where Russian lands are being seized, then obviously we will intervene."

He added in an audio message published by his media office: "We will defend our Russian people and everyone who lives there," explaining that his men will not wait for an "invitation" or permission to deploy in the region.

Prigozhin added, "The only thing we will ask for is ammunition so that we are not empty-handed, as we say in Russia."

In recent days, the Belgorod region, especially its areas closest to the Ukrainian border, has been subjected to unprecedented heavy fire since the start of the war in Ukraine at the end of February 2022.

Prigozhin had previously criticized the country's military leadership for its failures in the war in Ukraine.

The head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, considered that 200 of the 10,000 Russian generals should be sent to Ukraine and placed on the front lines.

"These generals should try running in body armor on the front lines," Prigozhin told the media.

Prigozhin had previously criticized the country's military leadership for its failures in the war in Ukraine.
