The White House has officially proclaimed August as National Shooting Sports Month, issuing a presidential message that celebrates and honors the American traditions of marksmanship, hunting, and fishing. The message, released on August 4th, reinforces the administration’s commitment to protecting Second Amendment rights and promoting a culture of safety and responsibility.
In the statement, President Trump highlighted that for generations, shooting sports have instilled values of “focus, discipline, and confidence” in citizens. He noted that activities like hunting and fishing provide opportunities for Americans to experience the outdoors and connect with communities, stating they are a “cherished American tradition.”
The proclamation also emphasizes the administration’s dedication to ensuring that the “God-given right to bear arms shall not be infringed.” This message was welcomed by the firearm industry, with Joe Bartozzi, President and CEO of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), praising the administration for celebrating a national character of responsible firearm ownership.
The NSSF, which created the annual initiative, is encouraging all Americans to get involved during the month by visiting a local shooting range, taking a safety course, or introducing a newcomer to the sport. Many ranges and retailers across the country are hosting special events, training sessions, and promotions throughout August.
This year’s presidential proclamation builds on a congressional resolution introduced in July to officially designate August 2025 as “National Shooting Sports Month.” The resolution honors the contributions of small firearms manufacturers to the economy and culture of the United States.
