US Defense Secretary Mark Esper arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday for an unannounced visit to meet Iraqi officials.

Esber is expected to meet his Iraqi counterpart, Najah al-Shammari, and Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi to discuss the withdrawal of US troops from Syria, part of which has moved to Iraq.

Esper's visit to Baghdad comes a day after Moscow and Ankara agreed to deploy Syrian troops and Russian military police in northeastern Syria and to withdraw YPG fighters and weapons from the border with Turkey.
