UK and UN express their concerns over the starvation Crisis in Gaza Deepens

Date:

Gaza , Palestine – September 1, 2025

The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip has reached a catastrophic level, with international bodies, including the UK and the United Nations, expressing outrage over severe restrictions on aid entering the territory. As of today, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has officially declared a state of famine in Gaza City, a grim milestone that signifies a total collapse of food security for hundreds of thousands of civilians. The UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, has described the situation as a “man-made famine,” directly accusing Israeli authorities of blocking life-saving aid and creating a preventable disaster.

The UN-backed IPC report, the world’s leading authority on food security, confirmed what aid workers have been warning for months: all three key thresholds for famine have been surpassed in Gaza City. These criteria—catastrophic hunger, acute malnutrition among children, and high death rates—are a direct result of the relentless blockade and destruction of civil infrastructure. Aid agencies, including the World Food Programme (WFP), report that the current flow of relief meets less than 15% of the daily needs of Gaza’s population, which is now almost entirely dependent on humanitarian assistance.

In a powerful statement to Parliament, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy did not mince words. He declared that he was “outraged by the Israeli government’s refusal to allow in sufficient aid,” and reiterated his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. This marks a significant shift in diplomatic language, with Lammy directly challenging Israel’s policies. “This is not a natural disaster,” he stated. “It’s a man-made famine in the 21st century.” He also announced an additional £15 million in medical aid for the region, though he stressed that this funding can only have an impact if Israel allows it to be delivered safely.

The international outcry is mounting. More than 170 aid organizations have issued a joint statement condemning what they describe as a “deadly distribution scheme,” where military-controlled aid points have replaced the UN-led system, leading to dangerous, overcrowded zones where civilians have been repeatedly killed while trying to access food. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Doctors Without Borders have also condemned the situation, stating that their colleagues are “wasting away before their eyes.” The deliberate obstruction of aid, including restrictions on essential items like medical supplies and tents, has made humanitarian operations increasingly difficult and perilous.

For months, aid convoys have faced severe delays and rejections at checkpoints. While Israel claims these measures are necessary to prevent aid from being diverted by Hamas, international legal experts and humanitarian organizations have dismissed these allegations, citing a US Agency for International Development study that debunked such claims. The deliberate and systematic dismantling of the humanitarian system has left aid workers unable to reach the most vulnerable, with devastating consequences. The situation in Gaza serves as a stark warning of a humanitarian system pushed to the breaking point and a powerful example of a crisis that is entirely preventable.
