Trump is Not committed About Deterring Beijing on Taiwan

Date:

Concerns are mounting among analysts and the Taiwanese public that President Donald Trump is not fully committed to a robust strategy for deterring a Chinese attack on Taiwan, following recent presidential remarks that appeared to downplay the threat posed by Beijing.

Headline Points

  • • Public Doubt in Taiwan: A recent poll revealed that a majority of respondents in Taiwan do not believe President Trump is serious about preventing military action from Beijing, despite US assurances of support.

 • Presidential Rhetoric: The President recently stated that Beijing “doesn’t want to attack Taiwan” and suggested China poses “no real threat” in the Indo-Pacific, remarks that contrast sharply with the prevailing US military and foreign policy posture.

 • Taiwanese Defence Response: In a delicate balancing act, Taiwan’s Defence Minister Wellington Koo Li-hsiung suggested the President’s comments were “fundamentally rooted in deterrence” but immediately reaffirmed that “deterrence must be based on strength.”

 • Trade Deal Jitters: Analysts fear that Trump’s transactional approach, particularly his willingness to discuss Taiwan during trade negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, could leave the island’s security as a bargaining chip.

Strategic Ambiguity or Lack of Resolve?

President Trump’s recent comments, made during a meeting with a foreign counterpart and at other public events, have amplified existing anxieties over his unpredictable approach to cross-Strait relations.

When asked whether US actions were a sufficient deterrent to keep President Xi Jinping from invading Taiwan, the President stated, “China doesn’t want to do that,” before adding, “I think we’ll end up with a very strong trade deal.”

The statements have unnerved those who advocate for “strategic clarity,” or even a firm commitment to Taiwan’s defence, believing that such ambiguity or rhetorical minimization of the threat only emboldens Beijing.

While the US administration has repeatedly and explicitly reaffirmed its longstanding support for Taiwan as governed by the Taiwan Relations Act, the President’s personal rhetoric is viewed as conflicting and potentially detrimental to deterrence.

“Beijing could perceive Trump’s ambiguity as a lack of resolve,” noted one international relations analyst, “which heightens the risk that this ambiguity could extend to formal regional commitments, creating opportunities for China to test the boundaries.”

The Looming Trade-Security Nexus

A central fear among critics is that the President’s focus on securing a massive trade deal with China could lead to compromises on security issues.

When questioned directly on whether the US might adjust its position on Taiwan’s independence in exchange for a trade deal, the President was non-committal, stating, “We’re going to be talking about a lot of things.

I assume that will be one of them, but I’m not going to talk about it now.”

This transactional framing has created a deep sense of unease in Taipei. A majority of those polled in Taiwan believe that while the US President is capable of preventing military action, he is unwilling to do so, suggesting a lack of political priority for the island’s security outside of its role in the broader US-China economic rivalry.

The administration’s defence officials, including the Defence Secretary and Secretary of State, have maintained a consistent line, emphasizing that “deterrence of China over Taiwan is a cornerstone” of US Indo-Pacific strategy.

However, the President’s highly visible public statements, coupled with his repeated complaints that allies and partners should spend more on their own defence, continue to fuel the debate over the true depth of his commitment to Taiwan’s security and the long-term stability of the Taiwan Strait.
