In a significant development, trade unions in India have decided to postpone their planned nationwide general strike from May 20 to July 9, 2025. The decision was made during a meeting of the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and Independent Sectoral Federations and Associations.
Reasons Behind the Deferral
The trade unions cited the prevailing situation in the country, particularly after the Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed 26 innocent lives and the subsequent military actions by the Indian Armed Forces. In light of these events, the unions deemed it necessary to take a responsible and patriotic stance by deferring the strike.
Demands and Concerns
Despite the postponement, the trade unions remain committed to opposing the implementation of Labour Codes and addressing worker exploitation. They have expressed concerns over:
- Unilateral increase in working hours: Employers are allegedly extending working hours without consent.
- Violation of statutory minimum wages and social security benefits: Employers are reportedly flouting laws related to minimum wages and social security.
- Retrenchment of contract workers: Contract workers are being laid off without justification.
Impact and Future Plans
The trade unions had initially planned to hold demonstrations across state capitals, district centers, and workplaces on May 20. Although the date has been rescheduled, they remain determined to press for their demands concerning workers, farmers, and the general public. The unions view the employers’ actions as “heinous attempts to implement notorious Labour Codes through the backdoor”
