Date:

Tokyo , Japan – August 20, 2025

The Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) began today in Yokohama, Japan. The three-day summit, running from August 20 to 22, is co-hosted by Japan, the United Nations, the World Bank, and the African Union Commission. It brings together heads of state, government officials, and business leaders from across Africa to discuss a new vision for development on the continent.

Key Themes of the Conference:

 * Co-creating Innovative Solutions: The theme of this year’s summit is “Co-creating Innovative Solutions With Africa.” The focus is on a new approach to Japan-Africa relations, shifting from a donor-recipient model to a partnership based on shared challenges and co-development.

 * Green and Digital Economy: A major focus of the talks is on identifying joint opportunities in green hydrogen, ammonia, and other clean energy sources, as well as advancing digital inclusion across the continent.

 * Health and Security: The summit will also address pressing issues of health, with a focus on building resilient healthcare systems, and security, as leaders discuss peacebuilding and stability in the face of growing regional conflicts.

The conference is a key part of Japan’s renewed engagement with Africa, and leaders from both sides are hoping to announce new initiatives and partnerships to address pressing challenges and drive sustainable growth.
