Wilfried Sengo, the defender of the French football team Monaco, apologized for the dangerous move, which resulted in a serious facial injury to Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, during a match in the French league.
Donaruma had blood on his face after a rival’s shoe hit his face in the 4-2 win over Monaco on Wednesday.
Sengo, whose shot was countered, tried to jump over Donnarumma, but instead hit his face.
Sengo wrote on social media in Italian and French: “certainly my action was unintentional, but then I was able to see that he had suffered a significant injury to his face. I wish you a full recovery”.
Donnarumma received treatment on the field, eventually he managed to stand up, walked off the field and was replaced by substitute goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.
The photos showed Donnarumma with a wound under his right eye. Sango, who had already been warned, was lucky to avoid getting a red card.
Saint-Germain said Donnarumma will undergo medical tests on Thursday and will most likely be rested for several days.
Saint Germain posted a video of Sengo in the locker room and talking with Donnarumma, who was smiling after the match.
In the video, the goalkeeper could be heard saying in Italian “Tranquillo”, which means “don’t worry”.
Social media has not been so understanding.
Monaco said in a statement on Thursday that it ” officially condemns the unacceptable racist remarks directed at Wilfried Sengo on social media after yesterday’s match against Saint-Germain.
Such behavior has no place in sports, both on and off the field, and is completely contrary to the values to which the club adheres. The club offers its full support to Wilfried”.
