For the first time in its history, host Australia reached the semi-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup by defeating France on penalties ( 7: 6 ) after drawing in the original and extra time without goals, so the two teams were forced to play a penalty shootout, which lasted for a long time, on Saturday, August 12 in Brisbane.

The French team wasted four penalties to Australia's three and after the elimination, the team's coach, Herve Runar, expressed his pride in the players and said" We should be proud of the girls this evening, they gave an exceptional game".

The Australian victory was achieved despite the survival of its first star Samantha Kerr on the bench at the opening whistle, as the captain entered the second half and scored her penalty kick later, and Australia will face the winning team between England and Colombia in the semi-final match later on Saturday in Sydney.

Australia and New Zealand will host the 2023 Women's World Cup, in its ninth edition, with the participation of 32 teams for the first time in the history of the tournament, which was launched in the nineties with only 12 teams to be expanded to 16 teams in 1999.
