Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos met on the sidelines of the BRICS ministerial meeting to discuss bilateral cooperation within the United Nations and BRICS, as well as security concerns in the Horn of Africa, according to the Russian foreign ministry.

During their discussions, the ministers explored practical arrangements for Ethiopia’s participation in the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan, scheduled for October 22–24, 2024. They also emphasized the development of business ties and the expansion of cultural and economic cooperation between their countries.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding comprehensive cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The ministers emphasized the importance of enhancing Russian-Ethiopian engagement across various multilateral platforms, particularly within the UN and BRICS.

Additionally, the diplomats exchanged perspectives on key global and regional issues, with a special focus on peace and security efforts in the Horn of Africa. They reiterated their countries’ readiness to strengthen collaboration in support of a multipolar world order and its legal framework.
