Putin’s Planned Visit to India Signals Continued Strategic Partnership

Moscow , Russia | August 8, 2025

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India by the end of 2025, a development that underscores the two nations’ enduring strategic partnership amid mounting international pressure on New Delhi over its continued energy ties with Moscow.

The news was confirmed by Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during his recent visit to Moscow. Doval, who met with both President Putin and Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoygu, stated that the dates for the visit were “almost finalised.” He emphasized the importance of the upcoming summit, noting that “summit-level meetings have always been watershed points for the relationship.”

The visit, which would be President Putin’s first to India since December 2021, comes at a time of heightened tensions between India and the U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed new tariffs on Indian imports, citing New Delhi’s substantial purchases of Russian oil. India, for its part, has maintained that its energy procurement is driven by national interest and that its relationship with Russia is “time-tested” and not viewed through the prism of a third country.

Discussions during the summit are expected to cover a range of topics, including further cooperation in defence, energy, and trade. The two leaders are also likely to discuss expanding India’s presence in the Arctic region and the finalisation of a second site for a Russian-built nuclear power plant. The visit is set to reinforce the strong ties between Russia and India, even as both nations navigate a complex and rapidly shifting global political landscape.
