Putin Announces Victory Day Truce Amid Global Defense Spending Surge

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The truce, set to begin at midnight on May 8 and end at midnight on May 11, aims to honor the historic occasion. Moscow has urged Ukraine to follow suit, warning of an “appropriate response” should the ceasefire be violated.

The Kremlin emphasized its readiness for peace talks without preconditions, signaling a potential shift in the ongoing conflict. However, skepticism remains, as previous ceasefires, including the Easter truce, were marred by violations.

Meanwhile, global defense spending is on the rise, driven by heightened tensions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The Three Seas Initiative, a coalition of Eastern European nations, is ramping up preparations for potential conflicts, further fueling the military spending boom.

Experts suggest that the Victory Day ceasefire could serve as a diplomatic gesture to the international community, particularly the United States, which has been critical of Russia’s actions. The truce also coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, adding a layer of geopolitical significance to the move.
