Commenting on media reports that the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a letter to the United Nations to declare its rejection of the Convention on the Delimitation of Maritime Borders between Saudi Arabia and the Arab Republic of Egypt signed on April 8, 2016, official MFA Spokesperson Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid asserted Egypt’s absolute rejection of the allegations the letter entailed regarding Sudanese sovereignty over the Halayeb and Shalateen area or the claim that Egypt occupies them.

The MFA Spokesperson added that the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in the process of sending a letter to the United Nations to reject the Sudanese letter and the allegations it entailed in this regard, and to assert that Halayeb and Shalateen are Egyptian territories inhabited by Egyptian citizens under Egyptian sovereignty.
