Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Russia will continue to strengthen its defense capabilities, but is ready to do everything in its power to "advance the process of disarmament."
`` Our army and navy have proved their high readiness, and we intend to build our defense capabilities and put on alert the hyper-acoustic, laser and other modern weapons systems that other countries do not yet have, '' the Russian president said in a meeting with senior officers and prosecutors on their appointment to senior positions today.
"This statement does not mean threatening anyone. On the contrary, we are ready to do our utmost to advance the disarmament process," Putin said.
The Russian president pointed out that modern Russian weapons systems "aim to ensure our security in the face of growing threats."
President Putin announced new Russian strategic weapons in the spring of last year, including the Kingal, Avangard and Borevistnik supersonic missiles, the Peresvit laser gun, the Poseidon nuclear submarine and the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile.
