A Near-Death Experience in the Waves

Cage, who has always been committed to authenticity in his roles, took on the challenge of learning to surf for The Surfer. However, the training proved to be more dangerous than expected. In a candid interview, he recalled how he struggled against the powerful ocean currents, describing the moment as one where he “could have died.” The actor explained that his surfboard was seen floating upright—a phenomenon surfers call “tombstoning,” which indicates that the rider is submerged and possibly in distress.

The film was shot in Yallingup, Western Australia, a location known for its stunning beaches but also unpredictable waters. Cage admitted that shark sightings and treacherous weather conditions added to the challenges of filming. Despite his previous attempts at surfing, he confessed that every time he tried, he was “pounded to smithereens” by the waves1.
