As Russia continues its war, NATO military leaders meet to determine what role U.S. and European forces could play in the future defense of Ukraine.
In a series of high-level meetings in Washington and Europe, military and political leaders from NATO member states have been working to finalize a plan that would provide Ukraine with the ability to defend itself and ensure its future security.
The discussions come as Russia continues its war and Moscow makes new demands, which are seen by Western leaders as non-starters.
The United States, according to a statement by President Donald Trump, will provide air assistance to help backstop a European force. France and Britain have also expressed willingness to deploy thousands of troops to help observe any future peace deal. Ukrainian officials have requested $90 billion in military assistance, including Patriot air defense systems. The meetings have highlighted the enormous gaps between the two sides, as Russia insists that any security guarantees must include its participation.
The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said any discussions without Russian input are a “road to nowhere.” Despite these challenges, the allies are determined to forge a path toward a sustainable peace.
