Isolated Yun defense team : imposing martial law does not amount to rebellion

Date:

The legal defense team of the deposed South Korean President Yun Suk-yul said that the imposition of martial law, which lasted only hours, does not amount to accusing him of rebellion, and that the president will announce his position before the court once a public hearing is held in his impeachment trial.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted Seok Dong-hyun, a member of the defense team, as telling reporters on Tuesday that Yun denies the accusations of rebellion against him for declaring martial law on December 3 this year.

It is noteworthy that a trial is currently being prepared before the Constitutional Court to determine whether Yun will be removed from office or restore his presidential powers, after parliament voted, last Saturday, in favor of removing him due to the imposition of martial law, which did not last long.

Yoon is currently suspended from the exercise of his duties. “President Yun will express his position in court with confidence and in accordance with his own convictions,”seok said.

“The president does not think of accusations of rebellion as a legal concept, but realistically, since the investigative agencies are acting in this way, there will be a response to the investigation,”he added.

The lawyer stated that the legal defense team plans to divide its work into 3 areas, namely, dealing with investigations, the impeachment trial, and other trials.

He added that the criteria for rebellion were not met, claiming that the imposition of martial law was not aimed at seizing the government, and did not include any violent elements, according to the Yonhap news agency.
