Israeli warplanes and artillery bombed targets in Syria after a rare rocket launch from the northeastern neighbor, as tensions between Jews and Muslims reached a peak on Sunday at a volatile shrine in Jerusalem with simultaneous religious rituals between Muslims and Jews.

The Israeli military struck targets in the Gaza Strip early Friday, pushing the region toward a wider conflagration after a day of rocket fire along the country’s northern and southern borders following two days of unrest at Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site. Gaza militants quickly fired off a new barrage of rockets, setting off air raid sirens across southern Israel.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, whom Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to sack last week, has completed his visit to the occupied West Bank and warned of Iranian interference.

An Israeli court on Thursday charged two Jewish settlers with committing a "terrorist act" by attacking Palestinians in a village in the northern occupied West Bank this month, officials confirmed.

Demonstrations are still sweeping Israel in opposition to the judicial reform plan adopted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some of his government ministers, especially after Netanyahu's decision to dismiss Defense Minister Yoav Galant, who called on him to stop the reform plan
