Both Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and King Abdullah II, on the sidelines of the joint summit held on Thursday, October 19, 2023 in Cairo, stressed that any attempt to forcibly displace Gaza residents to Jordan or Egypt is "rejected".

At the end of their meeting on Thursday in Cairo, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah II called for an "immediate cessation of the war on Gaza" and reiterated their rejection of the "policy of collective punishment" of the Gaza Strip.

This bilateral summit produced a joint statement in which the two sides consolidated their position on what is happening in Gaza and the resulting repercussions that may be reflected on the demographics of the two countries.

These fears have led Sisi and King Abdullah II to warn of a regional "catastrophe" if the war spreads on a regional scale. This position is a confirmation of their previous positions, which they expressed unilaterally in the throne speech to the Jordanian King on Wednesday, October 11, and in Sisi's meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Schulz on Wednesday, October 18.

They stressed the" unified position of Jordan and Egypt rejecting the policy of collective punishment of siege, starvation or displacement of brothers in Gaza, "and stressed that"any attempt of forced displacement to Jordan or Egypt is rejected".

The statement added that the leaders of the two countries demanded "an immediate cessation of the war on Gaza, the protection of civilians, the lifting of the blockade and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people there".

The Egyptian President and the Jordanian King also stressed that "the non-stop of the war, its expansion and the spread of its effects, will move the region to a dangerous slide that threatens to cause a disaster to enter the region, the consequences of which are feared".

The statement did not address the issue of the beginning of the entry of aid in the direction of the Strip, at a time when Biden had referred to Sisi's approval of the entry of 20 trucks as the first batch of humanitarian aid trucks through Rafah to the besieged Strip, which is inhabited by 2.4 million people.

The meeting comes ahead of an international summit called by Egypt to be held on Saturday in an attempt to stop the current escalation.

The holding of this bilateral meeting came after the cancellation of the summit, which was scheduled to be held on Wednesday in Amman with the participation of US President Joe Biden and the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, in addition to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah II, after the bombing that targeted the Baptist Hospital in Gaza last Tuesday, which killed hundreds of children, women, patients and medical staff.
