In a statement on Friday, Pentagon spokesman Phil Ventura confirmed the deployment of a squadron of A-10 attack aircraft to the region, noting that the date for sending the aircraft to the region was brought forward by the attacks in Syria.

He added that the leadership ordered the survival of the strike group, which includes an aircraft carrier, in the region to support the forces of the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM).

This comes after a series of drone and missile attacks on US forces in Syria last week, one of which resulted in the death of an American retired man and the wounding of several other soldiers.

The United States accused "pro-Iranian groups" of carrying out the attack, and of launching strikes on sites inside Syria in response to the bombing of American forces.
