Liverpool, the holders of the English Premier League title, announced Tuesday that their former Scottish player and attacker Ian St John had died for 82 years after a long journey with illness.
St. John's was an influential Liverpool lineup under coach Bill Shankly and helped the club qualify for the Premier League in its first season after joining in a record deal for the club for £37,500 ($52,000) coming from Merwell.
The former Scotland striker, St John, scored 118 goals in over 400 games with Liverpool during 1961-1971 and died on Monday evening.
In a statement, the St. John family said: "We would like to inform you with a sad heart that after a long journey with illness we have lost a husband, father and grandfather. He left in peace and his family was on his side. "
St John's scored an extra-time goal to give Liverpool a 2-1 win over Leeds United in the 1965 FA Cup Final and give his club its first title in the competition, as well as being part of the League title-winning squad the following year.
Scottish left - back Andy Robertson wrote on Twitter that St John is a man of warmth, humor, knowledge, wisdom and joy. Scotland has lost as well as Liverpool is a true giant. "
Everton, Grimm and Liverpool's neighbour, said St. John's death was "a real loss for the game, and he's among the influencers in our city."
