Belarusian Arena Sabalenka ranked tenth, on Wednesday, in the Professional Women’s Tennis Association’s ranking, won her third title in the Abu Dhabi Games at the expense of the Russian player Veronica Kodermetova (46 in the world) 6-2, 6-2.
With this remarkable achievement, Sabalenka raised her winning streak to 15 matches.
After the 22-year-old finished her season in 2020 by winning two consecutive titles in Ostrava and Lents, she would have raised her number of titles to nine, to advance to the seventh place, the highest in her career, when the new classification is released next week.
First, she broke her opponent’s serve and led 4-2, following her strong performance since her exit from the third round of the French Roland Garros tournament last October. She then decided the first set in 26 minutes. She continued her lead and breaking her serve at the beginning of the second (1-2) was not sufficient for her opponent to return to the atmosphere of the match, so she responded quickly and settled the final match in 65 minutes.
The longest streak of victories in professional history is that of the Czechoslovakian Martina Navratilova, who reached 74 matches in 1984.
