Egypt Foils Major Brotherhood-Linked Terror Plot Targeting Key Facilities

Date:

Cairo, Egypt – July 20, 2025

Egypt’s Interior Ministry announced today that it has successfully dismantled a significant terror plot orchestrated by the “Hasm Movement,” an armed faction closely linked to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

The meticulously planned operation aimed to target critical security and economic facilities across the country, marking a renewed effort by the banned group to destabilize Egypt.
According to a detailed statement released by the ministry, intelligence gathered by the National Security sector uncovered that Hasm leaders, operating from abroad – specifically identified as Turkey – were actively working to reactivate the group’s presence within Egypt. The intricate plot involved the illicit infiltration of a highly trained operative, who had received advanced military training in a neighboring country, through an illegal border crossing. This individual’s mission was to execute hostile operations against vital state infrastructure.

The ministry’s revelation gains further weight in light of a recent video widely circulated on social media. The footage, believed to be released by Hasm, purportedly showed members undergoing intensive military-style training in a desert area of a country bordering Egypt. The video explicitly included threats of imminent terrorist attacks on Egyptian soil, underscoring the serious nature of the thwarted plot.

In response to this grave threat, Egyptian security forces launched a swift and decisive pre-emptive strike. During a raid on a suspected militant hideout in Cairo’s densely populated Boulaq al-Dakrour neighborhood, a fierce exchange of gunfire erupted. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of two alleged militants, identified as Ahmed Ghoneim and Abdel Latif. Ghoneim was a known fugitive with multiple prior convictions, including a death sentence for the killing of police officers and attempts to target the presidential plane.
Tragically, the ministry reported that the militants opened fire indiscriminately at security forces and the surrounding area during the raid, leading to the casualties. A civilian bystander, caught in the crossfire, succumbed to injuries from the militants’ random gunfire. Additionally, a police officer was wounded while attempting to provide aid to the fallen civilian.

The Egyptian government has consistently maintained a firm stance against the Muslim Brotherhood, designating it as a terrorist organization. Hasm, which emerged in recent years, has been held responsible for a series of assassination attempts and bombings between 2016 and 2019, though its public activities had seen a lull. This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent efforts by the Egyptian state to counter what it perceives as a continuing and evolving threat from the outlawed group and its various offshoots.

The Interior Ministry reiterated its unwavering commitment to “foil terrorist plots orchestrated by the Muslim Brotherhood and affiliated groups,” ensuring the safety and stability of the nation. Investigations into the comprehensive plot are ongoing, under the direct supervision of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the network and bring all involved to justice. The incident underscores the continuous vigilance required by Egyptian security forces in their ongoing fight against terrorism.
