In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Israel has conducted a series of deadly airstrikes in Yemen, leaving at least 35 people dead and 131 wounded, according to the Houthi-run health ministry. The attacks, which targeted military and civilian sites in the capital, Sanaa, and the al-Jawf governorate, came just one day after an Israeli strike on a residential building in Doha, Qatar, that had been housing Hamas leaders.
The strikes in Sanaa reportedly hit a medical facility, a fuel storage facility, and residential areas, including homes in the al-Tahrir neighborhood. The Yemen Oil and Gas Corporation confirmed that a medical station on al-Sitteen Street in Sanaa was targeted. While the Israeli military confirmed the attacks, stating they hit “military targets belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime,” the strikes on civilian infrastructure have drawn widespread condemnation. The military statement said the targets included “military camps,” the Houthis’ “Military Public Relations Headquarters,” and a fuel storage facility used for military activities.
This latest development follows an Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar, which targeted the political bureau of Hamas, a key intermediary in the ongoing Gaza ceasefire negotiations. While Hamas’s top leadership reportedly survived the attack, it killed six people, including a son of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya and a Qatari security officer. The Qatari Prime Minister has since condemned the attack as an act of “state terrorism,” and has suspended its participation in ceasefire negotiations with Israel. The attacks in both Qatar and Yemen have heightened fears of a broader conflict engulfing the region.
