COVID-19 Cases on the Rise in India: Maharashtra Reports 84 New Cases

India is experiencing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, prompting the central government to advise states to prepare for potential surges. Maharashtra has reported a significant increase in cases, with 84 new infections detected recently, bringing the state’s total active cases to 467. The cases are spread across various cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Nagpur.

*Breakdown of Cases in Maharashtra:*

– *Mumbai:* 32 new cases reported, with a total of 411 cases since January 2025

– *Pune:* 19 new cases reported in the municipal corporation limits, and 31 cases reported in the district

– *Thane:* 14 new cases reported in the municipal corporation limits, and 2 in the district

– *Other cities:* Cases reported in Nagpur, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Raigad

*National Situation:*

India’s active COVID-19 cases have risen to 3,961, with Kerala leading the tally with over 1,400 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 506 cases. Other states reporting cases include:

– *Kerala:* 1,400+ active cases

– *Tamil Nadu:* 66 active cases (as of May 25)

– *Delhi:* 5 active cases (as of May 25)

– *Karnataka:* 13 active cases (as of May 25)

*Government Response:*

The Union Health Ministry has issued advisories urging citizens to take precautions, particularly in public spaces. Recommended measures include:

– *Wearing masks* in populated areas

– *Practicing hand hygiene*

– *Avoiding travel* if feeling unwell

*New Variants:*

Two new variants of COVID-19, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, have been identified in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, respectively. While neither variant has been declared a variant of concern, they are being closely monitored by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

*Fatalities:*

A total of 14 deaths have been reported in Maharashtra, with two recent fatalities reported in the state – a 21-year-old diabetic patient in Thane district and an 84-year-old comorbid patient in Karnataka. Other states, including Kerala and Delhi, have also reported COVID-19-related deaths.
