China Clears World’s Largest Amphibious Aircraft AG600 for Production

Date:

In a significant milestone for China’s aviation industry, the country’s largest amphibious aircraft, the AG600, has obtained its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). This certification paves the way for the aircraft’s production and delivery, expected to commence by October 2025.

Key Features of the AG600

– *Size*: The AG600 is a behemoth of hybrid design, measuring 38.9 meters in length, 11.7 meters in height, and boasting a wingspan of 38.8 meters.

– *Capacity*: It can carry up to 12 tonnes of water for firefighting missions and has a maximum takeoff weight of 60 tonnes.

– *Range*: With a practical range of 4,500 kilometers, the AG600 can fly slowly at low altitudes, making it ideal for extinguishing forest fires.

– *Speed*: Its minimum level flight speed is 220 km/h, and it has a designed service ceiling of 7,600 meters above sea level.

Versatility and Potential Uses

The AG600’s unique design enables it to operate from both land runways and water surfaces, making it suitable for various applications, including:

– *Aerial Firefighting*: Scooping water from lakes or seas within 20 seconds to suppress forest fires.

– *Maritime Patrol*: Conducting law enforcement and surveillance missions in coastal regions.

– *Search and Rescue*: Transporting rescue personnel and equipment into inaccessible areas.

– *Island Supply Missions*: Providing logistical support to island outposts.

Strategic Implications

The AG600’s capabilities have significant strategic implications, particularly in the South China Sea. With its long operational range and amphibious design, the aircraft could potentially serve dual purposes – both civil and military. Analysts note that the AG600 provides a non-aggressive yet strategically potent method of maintaining presence and reach in remote areas.

Production and Export Plans

The Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) aims to obtain the production certificate for the AG600 by August 2025. Initial buyers are likely to be state agencies, but AVIC is exploring international markets and may seek overseas certification depending on demand.
