BANGLADESH TRIBUNAL ISSUES ARREST WARRANTS FOR EX-PM SHEIKH HASINA OVER JULY-AUGUST UNREST

Date:

DHAKA – A Bangladeshi tribunal has issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several others in connection with alleged crimes committed during the July-August mass uprising. The warrants were issued by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), which is investigating allegations of murder, torture, and other atrocities during the protests.

The tribunal’s decision marks a significant development in the country’s efforts to hold those responsible for the violence accountable. Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and fled the country on August 5, 2024, faces multiple charges related to the alleged atrocities.

According to the tribunal, the warrants were issued after a thorough review of evidence and witness testimonies. The investigation suggests that Sheikh Hasina and other accused individuals were involved in planning and executing the alleged crimes.

The July-August mass uprising saw widespread protests and clashes between demonstrators and security forces, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries. The unrest was sparked by student-led protests demanding reforms and an end to perceived authoritarianism.

The ICT has been investigating the alleged crimes since August, and the warrants are part of its ongoing efforts to bring those responsible to justice. The tribunal has also issued warrants for other individuals, including high-ranking government and security officials who served under Sheikh Hasina’s administration.

The development has sparked mixed reactions in Bangladesh, with some hailing it as a step towards accountability and others expressing concerns about the potential for politicization of the judicial process.

– Human rights groups have expressed support for the investigation, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency.

– Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party has condemned the warrants, calling them “politically motivated” and “part of a witch hunt.”
