Bobby Whitlock, Founding Member of Derek and the Dominos, Passes Away at 77

Bobby Whitlock, the legendary pianist, guitarist, and songwriter who co-founded the iconic rock band Derek and the Dominos, has died at the age of 77. Whitlock passed away on August 10, 2025, at his home in Texas, surrounded by his loved ones, after a brief battle with cancer.

Whitlock’s illustrious music career spanned over five decades, with notable contributions to some of rock’s most influential albums, including Derek and the Dominos’ “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs”, George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass”, and The Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main Street”. He co-wrote seven songs for the Derek and the Dominos album, including “Tell the Truth” and “Bell Bottom Blues”.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Whitlock began his music journey in the 1960s, signing with Stax Records as the label’s first white artist. He worked with renowned artists such as Sam & Dave and Booker T. & the M.G.’s, and later joined Delaney and Bonnie’s touring band, where he met Eric Clapton. This collaboration led to the formation of Derek and the Dominos in 1971, alongside Clapton, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon.

Whitlock’s legacy extends beyond his work with Derek and the Dominos. He released several solo albums and contributed to various projects, including albums by Dr. John and Manassas. In 2024, he was inducted into Memphis’ Beale Street Walk of Fame, a testament to his enduring impact on the music industry.

Tributes have poured in for Whitlock, with Eric Clapton paying his respects on Facebook, saying, “Our dear friend Bobby Whitlock, has passed away at 77, our sincere condolences to Bobby’s wife CoCo and his family on this sad day…. RIP Bobby.” Whitlock is survived by his wife, Coco Carmel Whitlock, and his three children, Ashley Faye Brown, Beau Elijah Whitlock, and Tim Whitlock Kelly.
