“Happy Gilmore 2” Defies Critics, Dominates Netflix Charts Globally

Date:

Hollywood, CA – July 28,2025

Despite a largely lukewarm reception from critics, Adam Sandler’s highly anticipated sequel, “Happy Gilmore 2,” has scored a massive hole-in-one with audiences, reportedly landing the number one spot on Netflix in over 60 countries since its release on July 25th.

The film, which brings back Sandler as the iconic hot-headed golfer Happy Gilmore almost three decades after the original, has been a major draw for nostalgic fans and new viewers alike. While critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a middling score, audience reviews have been considerably more favorable, with many celebrating its return to the signature Sandler brand of comedy.

However, the film’s star-studded roster of cameo appearances has become a talking point, with some viewers and critics alike questioning their overall contribution to the plot. From professional golfers like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler to celebrities such as Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny, the sequel boasts an impressive, some might say overwhelming, number of familiar faces.

While some cameos have been praised for their comedic timing or relevant integration, others have been criticized as gratuitous and distracting from the core narrative.

The original “Happy Gilmore” (1996) also received mixed reviews upon its initial release but went on to achieve cult classic status. It appears “Happy Gilmore 2” is following a similar trajectory, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Adam Sandler’s unique comedic style and the power of fan loyalty, especially on a global streaming platform like Netflix.

Netflix has not yet released official viewership numbers, but the widespread reports of its international success indicate that “Happy Gilmore 2” is a significant win for the streaming giant and a testament to the power of beloved franchises, even in the face of critical disapproval.
