An earthquake hits the west of the Algerian capital with a magnitude of 4.9

Date:

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter Scale struck the Chlef State west of the Algerian capital during the early morning hours of Monday, according to the country’s astronomy and Geophysics Research Center

The center said that the earthquake, which occurred at 1: 09 local time, was centered three kilometers from the zubujah area of the Gulf state, west of the capital, on the Mediterranean coast.

In an initial statement, the center’s media officer, Major Sayed Hamad taqar, confirmed that “the civil protection services in the Gulf have not yet recorded any human or material losses or the intervention of its units, following the earthquake witnessed in the state and felt by most of the population”.

Videos documenting the moment of the earthquake also spread on social media, as Algerians came out of their homes fearing damage.

And last week, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4 on the Richter Scale occurred in the city of Tipaza.

Algeria is one of the seismically active regions, due to its location on the seismic belt of the Mediterranean basin.
