Diplomatic Breakthrough: Palestinian Authority Affirms Support for US-Led Gaza Proposal, Citing Pathway to Two-State Solution

In a significant diplomatic move following the joint announcement by US President Donald J. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has publicly welcomed the 20-point Gaza peace plan, commending the United States’ ‘sincere and determined efforts’ to end the devastating war in the Strip. The official statement from Ramallah, the administrative capital of the Palestinian Authority, signals crucial political support for the ambitious plan, particularly given the proposal’s mention of a future path to Palestinian statehood and its provision for the PA to eventually take over governance of Gaza.

This welcoming response from the PA adds considerable regional weight to the US-brokered agreement, shifting the geopolitical focus squarely onto Hamas, the sole remaining party yet to formally accept the terms. The PA’s acceptance leverages the most exciting aspect of the proposal—its potential to finally forge a diplomatic solution—and affirms their confidence in President Trump’s ability to find a viable path to peace.

Headline Points of the PA’s Position

 * Welcome to US Efforts:

The PA formally welcomed President Trump’s “sincere and determined efforts to end the war on Gaza,” affirming confidence in his ability to achieve peace.

 * Confidence in the US Partnership: The statement underscored the importance of the partnership with the United States in working toward a comprehensive agreement.

 * Pathway to Statehood: Crucially, the PA viewed the plan as paving the way for a just peace based on the Two-State Solution, with an “independent and sovereign State of Palestine living side by side with the State of Israel.”

 * Unified Palestinian Territory: The PA stressed that a comprehensive deal must ensure the unification of Palestinian land and institutions in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

 * Commitment to Reform: The PA reaffirmed its commitment to implement its internal reform programme, including abolishing the controversial payments to families of prisoners and martyrs, and holding elections within one year after the end of the war, a key pre-condition in the 20-point US plan for the PA to assume control of Gaza.

Strategic Embrace of the Proposal

The Palestinian Authority’s swift endorsement is a powerful, albeit cautious, maneuver. The 20-point plan, while primarily focused on ending the war, securing the release of Israeli hostages, and demilitarising the Gaza Strip, directly addresses the PA’s long-term interests by providing a mechanism for it to return to power in Gaza after a transitional period.

The proposal explicitly states that once Hamas is removed and an interim technocratic committee is established, control will pass to the PA after it completes a rigorous reform programme. For the PA, this represents a major opportunity to reassert its influence across the Palestinian territories, a core political aspiration.

However, the PA’s statement was careful to reiterate that any final agreement must lead to an end to the occupation and a path toward a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. This signals that while they welcome the initial framework, the Authority will use the momentum to push for the explicit political horizon that many of the US’s Arab partners—who have also welcomed the plan—are demanding.

Divided Palestinian Response

The PA’s diplomatic support stands in stark contrast to the reaction from the militant groups in Gaza. While Hamas has stated it is studying the plan “in good faith,” the allied Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group swiftly rejected the proposal. The PIJ called the US plan a “recipe for continued aggression,” claiming it was an attempt to impose through diplomacy what Israel had failed to achieve through military force.

The US-Israeli plan now hangs in the balance, with the backing of Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and several influential Arab and Western nations. All eyes remain on Gaza, where the Hamas leadership must soon decide whether to accept a deal that demands its complete political and military surrender or face the severe consequences of further military action with overwhelming international diplomatic consent.
