In a Stunning U-Turn, Trump Now Backs Ukraine to Reclaim All Its Land

In a dramatic shift from his long-held position, US President Donald Trump announced today that he now believes Ukraine can “fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.” The statement, made on his social media platform Truth Social, marks a significant reversal from his previous stance that Ukraine would likely need to cede territory to Russia to end the ongoing conflict. The change in position came after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Headline Points

 * President Trump, in a post on his social media platform, said he believes Ukraine can “fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.”

 * The statement is a sharp departure from his earlier position, which suggested Ukraine would have to make territorial concessions to Russia to end the war.

 * Trump attributed his new stance to a deeper understanding of the “Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation,” stating that Russia is in “BIG Economic trouble” and looks like a “paper tiger.”

 * The US President also said he now supports NATO countries shooting down Russian aircraft that violate their airspace, a major escalation in rhetoric.

 * Ukrainian President Zelenskyy hailed Trump’s new position, calling it a “big shift” and stating that the two leaders were now “closer in their understanding of what is happening on the ground.”

A New Assessment of the War

Until now, the President has been a vocal proponent of a negotiated settlement to the war, frequently suggesting that Ukraine might not be able to reclaim all of its land, including Crimea. His new position, however, is based on a fresh assessment of the conflict, which he says has revealed the weaknesses of the Russian military and economy. In his post, he wrote, “Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years, a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win.” He added that this protracted conflict is making Russia look like a “paper tiger.”

The President also promised that the United States would “continue to supply weapons to NATO for NATO to do what they want with them.” This statement, coupled with his endorsement of NATO countries shooting down Russian aircraft that violate their airspace, signals a more confrontational approach to the conflict.

Zelenskyy’s Welcome of the Shift

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who has long insisted that Ukraine will not cede any territory, welcomed the President’s new stance. After meeting with him at the UNGA, Zelenskyy told reporters that his discussions with the President had led to a “big shift” in his views. He added that he believes the President’s new position on the war could also help change the stance of other world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The change in position comes at a critical time, as the war has dragged on for more than three years with no clear end in sight. While military and political analysts are skeptical that a total victory for Ukraine is possible, the President’s new rhetoric is a major boost to morale in Kyiv. The long-term implications of this new position, however, remain to be seen, as it marks a stark contrast to the President’s previous emphasis on a quick negotiated peace.
