The affected brands, including Gucci, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen, are all owned by the global luxury group Kering. The breach was first detected on Friday, when a customer in New York reported receiving an unusual email notification for a purchase she didn’t make. The incident quickly unraveled into a full-scale investigation after the hackers posted a sample of the stolen data on a dark web forum, claiming to have accessed millions of customer records. A representative for Kering has stated that they are working with cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to assess the full scope of the attack.

The incident is particularly alarming because it targets a sector known for its high-profile and wealthy clientele. The stolen data could be used for sophisticated phishing scams, identity theft, or even physical attacks, as the information could reveal a customer’s location and purchase habits. Customers of the affected brands have been advised to be on high alert for suspicious emails or phone calls and to change their passwords immediately.

This is not the first time luxury brands have been targeted by hackers. A similar breach occurred in 2023, exposing the vulnerabilities in the retail sector’s digital infrastructure. Industry experts are now questioning whether luxury companies are investing enough in cybersecurity to protect their valuable customer information.
