Videos taken by local residents documented the moments of the bridge collapse, showing cars and trucks falling into the river. Other footage showed the effects of the accident and the great destruction caused by the bridge, which is 533 meters long and was built in the Sixties and is 1,300 kilometers north of the capital Brasilia, connecting the cities of “stretto” and”aguarnopolis”.
The rescue operation was further complicated by the leakage of sulfuric acid from one of the trucks that was crossing the bridge at the moment of the accident, which aggravated the seriousness of the situation. The police and the National Road Administration of Brazil announced the start of immediate and extensive investigations to uncover the causes of the accident and accurately determine the responsibilities.
Residents and local authorities are demanding immediate measures to ensure the safety of infrastructure and avoid similar disasters in the future.
